About Postcards from the Middle
A postcard is a bond between place, sender, and recipient. In the space of a few inches, image and text combine to tell stories about people, relationships, environments, and experiences. We may be more likely to send postcards when far from home, but a postcard of home can open new, even strange ways of understanding our sense of place. This multi-part program examined the exhibition Strange & Familiar Places that was on view at the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, inviting photographers to create a series of photo postcards that address personal stories about place. Select images from each participant were then featured in a pop-up installation at the museum during a Night Shift event. During this event guests were invited to take a postcard or two, write a note to someone and place it in an antique mailbox. These postcards were then mailed out to their intended recipient.
